MAXCY HALL POP-UP

A laser cut pup-up book of the University of New Haven’s most famous building.

OVERVIEW

I set out to create a unique gift shop item for University of New Haven Alumni. Focusing on the most iconic building on campus, Maxcy Hall, the perfect muse was chosen. I studied the architecture, honing in on certain key characteristics of the building’s design that needed to be in the final piece, such as the brick pattern along the edge. I studied how popup books functioned, fascinated with how the 2D space becomes 3D with one simple movement. Trial and error was my best friend, learning through mistakes until I grasped the function. I learned how to allow one layer to bend into two form purely by moving the paper back and forth and cutting over and over until it all clicked. The final piece was made using an epsilon laser cutter, though during testing a vinyl cutting machine was used. A stiff paper was chosen and tested to have the proper bend and support.
