STEP 1
Making the mark
This piece centers on using one mark to create something larger. What better to subvert expectations than to use “nothing” as that one element; the repetition of nothing becomes something. Rather than using a typeface, I created a mark that was more organic and less structured, to aid in the blending within the illustration. In doing so, I chose to write the word in my own hand writing.
STEP 2
Creating the brush
I used Adobe Capture to scan the mark and create a brush to use. This allowed for fine tuning repetition, variability, opacity, pressure, and more. While creating the brush, I made a decision to make it a feathered edge. Meaning the highest concentration of marks resided in the middle while lighter and less mark resided towards the edges. Allowing for control when illustrating yet, a chaotic disconnect to provide variation and grunge.
STEP 3
Digital Illustration Tablet
Using an illustration tablet paired with Photoshop furthered the relationship between physical and digital. Utilizing the natural drawing motions of the wrist provided the needed control. The pressure sensitivity of the tip mimicked that of graphite illustration. Furthermore, expanding on graphite illustration, the final illustration utilized values and shades seen in the medium including a derived rough quality.
STEP 4
Repetition & Shading
After testing and learning the nature of the brush, it quickly become natural to shade. Repeating in certain areas created the needed shadows, while changing perspective in some situations added depth. The beauty of the process was both hiding and highlighting the mark. Hiding it in a way to create a new form, but allowing some words here and there to stand out in order to inform the viewer of the inter workings within.
